Coming up this Sunday at 10am is the Weed Honey Badger ride. The weather is looking to be exceptional, if not a little chilly. The Shasta Valley has been clear of the fog that has been plaguing the Rogue Valley. The projected winds are to be 4mph out of the N/NW, so there is a chance we’ll have a slight tailwind on the return leg back into Weed.
The Jeep Rd section has it’s deep puddles like always at this time of year, although they were frozen solid when I rode it on MLK Jr. Day. I wouldn’t recommend trying to ride across the ice though. Best case scenario is you’ll slip and fall, giving yourself a nasty bruise and a funny story. Worse case is the ice breaks and you fall in and do your best Titanic impersonation. There’s no prizes for fastest time, so slow down and pick your way around the puddles. Word of warning, the juniper trees that lie the Jeep Rd don’t bend like our soft and cuddly firs and pines. They don’t give at all and will throw you right back into a puddle if you’re going to try and test them.

Speaking of Jeep Rd, folks often get confused when turning off of the A12 Cutoff road on to the Jeep Rd at the Juniper Ln intersection.

There’s a row of mailboxes and a fairly obvious gravel road that looks like the correct way to go if you’re new to the route. Your GPS will be prompting you to turn right and here’s this great looking gravel road basically heading to where you want to go. Don’t take it! You need to bear even more to the right to get onto the Jeep Rd. Here’s a picture showing the correct path to take.

Some folks have been asking about a shorter option. I wanted to give everyone the option of starting and finishing their ride at the rest stop section of the Weed Airport. Take the Weed Airport exit on I5 and park in the rest stop. the roll south and cross under the freeway and turn left onto Slough Rd to get back onto the route.

Click the above link to get directions on the shorter route option. It takes the ride from almost 49 miles to just over 35 miles.
See everyone out there!
