The Flywheel Honey Badger has three route options to choose from that all start and finish at Flywheel Bicycles in Talent. This Honey Badger ride is one of the only routes that actually starts and finishes in the Rogue Valley. All three routes climb west from town and cross over to the Little Applegate drainage. The longer routes ramble around the Little Applegate more before they climb back over the hills and back into the Rogue Valley.
The highest point on the ride is just above 4300ft, so they aren’t a great winter ride, but in low snowfall years you can usually tackle them. This is a great spring, summer, and fall ride due to the abundant water for filtering and plenty of shade. The climbing is no joke. When the hills around the Rogue Valley and Little Applegate were logged, they chose efficiency when it came time to build us our gravel roads. D9 Cats don’t sweat steep hills. Despite there being some double digit inclines, most of the uphills aren’t horrible. The descents are usually decomposed granites and smooth gravel, so doing these routes on a gravel bike is plenty doable.
After you’re back, pop into Flywheel and enjoy a beverage and swap some lies with your riding friends about your adventure.
